How can I open a coconut?

I searched the web for the easiest way to do this. There are so many different ways to crack a coconut online, but I think I've found the easiest ones. My kids and I use to throw the coconut around in the court yard until they cracked open...if only I had known there was an easier way. ;-)

There are two main types of coconuts that you might want to open:

Brown hairy coconuts
and Young thai coconuts

I have found “how to crack open a coconut” tutorials for both types of coconuts.

How do you Open a Coconut with Husk?

Some of the coconuts here in South Africa are hairier than the ones I've seen online. If you have one of the hairier varieties you might need to get rid of some of it first before attempting this.

Here is a video from a lady whose mother works in catering, so they open enough fresh coconut to know how to open a coconut the easy way. Things you will need:

The first step is to wet the entire coconut. This makes the outer shell of the coconut easier to break. Remember to wear your glove on the hand that is holding the coconut. There are four prominent lines on a coconut, you need to hold the coconut so that you can tap each one of the “breaking point” lines on the coconut, as shown in the video. You don't even need to hit it hard. It should start cracking immediately. Make sure you catch all that beautiful coconut water! Removing the flesh of the coconut is easy too, just use the curved knife to cut the pieces out.

When buying thai coconuts, make sure that they don't have any soft spots or mold on them. Also give it a shake to ensure that it contains water.

You will need a sharp cleaver. Cut off the husk of the coconut to expose the hard shell of the coconut. Puncture the shell with one swift smack, using the corner of the cleaver. Use the cleaver to pry the rest of the top of the coconut open.

How to check if your coconut has gone bad

A fresh thai coconut should have snow white flesh as well as a yellowish coconut water inside. A coconut that is “off” will have a pinkish hue to it and might have a strange smell. See the two compared in the video.
