Coconut water (CW) is great for weight loss as it is low in calories, it is fat-free and cholesterol free. Some have said that it curbs their appetites too.

As of late, CW has been used as healthier sports drink alternative. It contains no sugar, less sodium and because of its electrolyte properties, it is excellent at keeping the body hydrated and also helps to prevent cramping during and after vigorous exercise.

CW contains everything your body needs to keep moisture, namely: Calcium, magnesium (often called the “relaxation mineral”), phosphorous, potassium and sodium.   • Because of the hydrating effects of CW, it does wonders for the skin. It is especially beneficial for those with acne prone skin and can be applied topically too. It has been said to fight free radicals and may even help to prolong the aging process.   • CW is the best medicine for a hangover. It will quickly replenish lost electrolytes and hydrate. 

Constipation getting you down?

  • Most people suffer from constipation due to dehydration. Add some CW to your diet for a few days, and you should see softer, more frequent stools.   • Coconut water is a natural diuretic, therefore detoxing your body. This will help to clean out the urinary tract. 

Where to get it?

If you are lucky enough to live near a coconut tree, all you have to do is look for a young green coconut. Older, mature coconuts contain fewer nutrients because the nutrients in the water have seeped into the flesh of the coconut. Instructions on how to open and extract the water here. Fresh from the coconut is always best.

If you are like me and live nowhere near anything resembling a coconut tree, you will have to purchase your CW. You can find CW almost anywhere nowadays, which means that not all sources are going to offer the FULL health benefits of coconut water. 

What to look out for when buying coconut water

Do not buy:

  • CW made from reconstituted coconut water concentrate. This water is made from coconut water syrup, and most of the enzymes are lost in this process.
  • CW that has added flavor and sweeteners (including “fruit sugars”).
  • Pasteurized coconut water. If it's not kept in the refrigerator at the shop, don't buy it. These have been heat treated, which means that the coconut water no longer contains its natural goodness.  Any heat process taken place (including steam) is bad.  
  • Some companies have the coconuts dipped in poisonous substances to preserve them for transport. A safer alternative would be to freeze the coconuts in transit.

Do buy:

  • The best coconut water is derived from young coconuts.
  • Completely raw and unpasteurized.
  • No added flavors or preservatives.

  1. Exotic superfoods (kept frozen), Juice Press, Liquitera - Raw, organic unpasteurized. No High-pressure processes. If you have access to these, they are the best.
  2. Harmless Harvest - Products are frozen when shipped, organic young coconuts used, fair wages to workers, HPP processing is used to extend the shelf life (product is processed under very high pressure, leading to the inactivation of specific microorganisms and enzymes in the food)
