What Causes a Yeast Infection?

A yeast infection can occur on any part of your body and is found in males and females. It is usually characterized by redness and itching. It is caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the body, generally due to immune or hormone problems. Your diet has a lot to do with this too.

So, why Coconut Oil for Thrush?

Does coconut oil kill yeast?

Yes, and there have been studies done on this

The oil will also provide a protective barrier layer to the skin to prevent candida outbreaks.

Coconut oil contains three amazing ingredients, namely; Lauric, Capric and Caprylic acid. These three fatty acids are antiviral, antimicrobial and antifungal. The great thing about coconut oil is that it kills the bad, but leaves the good. In other words; it does not kill off friendly bacteria.

The Caprylic acid breaks down the cell membrane of the yeast cells, while the Lauric acid boosts the immune function. These benefits are available when coconut oil is applied topically and when consumed in a diet. Adding coconut oil to your diet will also increase the absorption of minerals and vitamins.

Things You Should Know

  • For those that are prone to yeast infections after intercourse, you can insert the coconut capsules inside the vagina after sex, to prevent infections. Instead of using the capsules you can also freeze the coconut oil in molds for the perfect suppository size.
  • It can also be used as a lubricant. Read more about using coconut oil as a lubricant here (some precautions need to be followed).
  • If you use the advice above and add coconut oil to your diet and apply it topically, your yeast symptoms should worsen and then improve within a few days. Keep using it for at least one week after all symptoms have cleared.
  • Your diet is very critical. A diet full of sugar, processed foods and one that is lacking in nutrition is going to encourage yeast overgrowth.

Other Natural Remedies for Yeast Infections

  • Use probiotics daily. Fermented foods are a great way to include these into your diet. Some of these include coconut yogurt, kefir, and kombucha. When you introduce good bacteria in your system, they eat all the “fuel” provided by your body and therefore, the harmful bacteria die off.
  • Eat a healthy diet to boost your immune system. Eat lots of vegetables and healthy fats.
  • Eat less sugar-containing foods. Yeast thrives on sugar.
  • Foods to avoid include alcohol, processed foods, bread, fruit.
  • Boost your immune system with vitamin C, oregano oil capsules, and olive leaf extract. The oregano and olive leaf extract have the added benefit of being antifungal.
  • Essential oils can be added to the coconut oil when applied to the skin. Good essential oils for yeast include Tea tree, lavender and myrrh essential oils. More essential oil choices discussed here.
  • Keep Your Skin Clean and Dry.
  • Take care of cuts or scrapes quickly.
  • Wear breathable fabrics.

  • Taking antibiotics.
  • Being pregnant (sex hormones increase the risk of yeast overgrowth)
  • Hormonal imbalances.
  • A weak immune system.
  • Unhygienic practices (wearing dirty clothes or leaving the skin damp and dirty)
  • Chronic health conditions such as diabetes.
  • Stress.

It will get Worse Before it Gets Better

Yes, unfortunately, you might experience worsened symptoms; this means that the natural yeast infection treatment is working. It should only last a few days, and then the infection will start to clear. Drink a lot of water during this time.
